READING

MATH

This week in reading we worked on making meaningful connections while reading.  Making meaningful connections help us understand the way the character feels and why he/she acts the way they do, as well as understanding the author's message (the big idea).  The students learned the difference between a coincident and connection.  A coincident is just something they have in common with the character or event in the story and connection is when they use part of their "life story" to relate to the character or event in the story.   In writing, the students worked on creating a BME plan staying focused on one main idea and using sensory details to elaborate that idea.   With the idea of multiplication introduced, we're headed to division.  We are going to be bouncing back and forth between multiplication and division as they are inverse operations.  Learning them together helps students make sense of the relationship between these two operations.

* Memorization will come with time.   We are going to begin our timed tests on Tuesdays.  This week we will have the 2's.  Students will have 5 minutes to complete a half sheet of multiplication questions (all 2's).  Later this will shorten to 3 minutes as they progress and show mastery.  A great way to study is to roll dice and double.  Or shuffle a deck of cards, select one and multiply it by 2.  Have fun with it!
